Seminar and concert by Cedrik Fermont: Noise music in Asia
Seminar
(In English)
The history of noise music cannot be distilled into a single narrative, instead, it unfolds through multiple, occasionally unconnected stories disseminated across different times and places. In Asia, the origins of noise music vary widely. It may emerge from sound art and industrial music, or it might trace its roots to noise rock, metal, grindcore, or punk, without omitting its development in the field of electroacoustic music.
Some might argue that noise is apolitical, while others see it as tied to the urban soundscapes of the local noisy world. It is also seen as a form of anti-mainstream expression that opposes the commercialisation of alternative music genres, for some others, it is a political statement, for others, it’s about fun only. There is not one absolute truth only.
This seminar will explore the complexities of noise music in Asia through a variety of lenses : socio-political, socio-economic, historical, and contextual, all while addressing critical issues such as gender dynamics.
Concert
