During his Phonos residency Ted Moore is planning to work on a new multichannel tape piece that uses many of the machine learning algorithms in the FluCoMa toolkit. In particular, He will attempt to use non-negative matrix factorisation to decompose audio taken from his own electronics improvisations and then spatialise different components of the sound at different locations in the space according to their spectral analysis. On a more technical dise, Moore is also interested in using dimensionality reduction algorithms and KMeans clustering to organise sound samples in 3D space for spatialization. Ted will premiere his new work on a live event at Sala Aranyó, on Friday 20th May at 20h.

As part of his stay at Phonos, Ted Moore will offer an open seminar on their current research as associate of the FLUCOMA Project at the University of Huddersfield. Wednesday 18 May at 12:30.  Room 55.003, Campus UPF de Poblenou. Attendance without previous reservation.

Ted Moore is a composer, improviser, intermedia artist, and educator. He holds a PhD in Music Composition from the University of Chicago and is currently serving as a Research Fellow in Creative Coding at the University of Huddersfield, investigating the creative affordances of machine learning and data science algorithms as part of the FluCoMa project. His work focuses on fusing the sonic, visual, physical, and acoustic aspects of performance and sound, often through the integration of technology. Ted’s work has been described as “frankly unsafe” (icareifyoulisten.com), “an impressive achievement both artistically and technically” (VitaMN), and “epic” (Pioneer Press).

Ted also frequently performs on electronics using his laptop, modular synthesizer systems, resonant physical objects, lighting instruments, and video projection. He has been featured as an installation artist at New York University, Northern Spark Festival (Minneapolis), Studio 300 Festival of Digital Art and Music (Lexington, KY), and St. Paul Public Library. As an improviser, Ted is one half of Binary Canary, a woodwinds-laptop improvisation duo alongside saxophonist Kyle Hutchins.
