Martin Matalon

(Buenos Aires,1958). He studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. from 1989 to 1996. Founder and musical director of the Music Mobile ensemble based in New York, dedicated to the contemporary repertoire.

In 2005 he received a Guggenheim fellowship and the prize of the l'Institut de France Académie des Beaux-Arts. In 2001, the City of Barcelona Award for Music for Metropolis and the Charles Ives Scholarship of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. In 1989 the "Opera Autrement" prize of the Centre Acanthes for the production of the chamber opera El milagro secreto based on the homonymous story by J.L Borges.

In 1993, he settled permanently in Paris, the IRCAM commissioned him to write the music for the newly restored version of Fritz Lang's Metropolis. After this considerable work, Martin Matalon immerses himself in the universe of Luis Buñuel and writes consecutively 3 new scores for the three surrealist films of the Aragonese filmmaker that he made between 1927 and 1932.

His catalogue includes a large number of chamber and orchestral works.

At the same time, Martin Matalon develops an activity as conductor. He has conducted, the Modern Ensemble, MusikFabrik, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Monte-Carlo, l'Orchestre d'Auvergne, Barcelona 216, l'Ensemble Intercontemporain...

His opera La Sombra de Venceslao, with libretto and staging by Jorge Lavelli on a text by Copi was premiered at the Rennes Opera House in October 2016.

Barcelona Modern Ensemble

Founded in 2004 and completely renovated since in 2013 the composer Demian Luna assumes its artistic direction. The task of recent years is mainly based on contemporary, current and newly created music, and on the interpretation and consequent dissemination of the young emerging values of contemporary Spanish and world music, as well as the composers already consecrated. Since 2014 he is the resident ensemble of the International Composition Course Barcelona Modern, concentrating on the work of the guest composers The ensemble has performed in prestigious halls and festivals, among which are: Sampler Sèries cycle of the Barcelona Auditorium, 400 MNCARS in Madrid, Spanien Modern Festival 2009 and 2011 in Vienna, Arnold Schönberg Center, Instituto Cervantes in Bremen, Festival Aujord'hui Musiques in Perpignan, Museum of the University of Navarra, . Festival Turbulences Sonores in Montpellier, etc. Formed by elite instrumentalists specialized in contemporary repertoire, the ensemble evolves and advances steadily, being already a benchmark of current music in the country.
