IULA MOURNS THE DEATH OF VICENT SALVADOR LIERN

03.02.2023

Vicent Salvador i Liern (1951-2023), philologist, essayist and poet, professor emeritus of the Universitat Jaume I, passed away last January 24 in Valencia.

He began his professional career in secondary education and later joined the Universitat de València, where he worked as a professor and directed its Publications Service. Later he was a professor at the Universitat d'Alacant and, finally, at the Universitat Jaume I in Castellon.

His scientific contributions made progress on the conceived borders: between language and literature, between literary and scientific discourse, between criticism and history of literature, and on phraseology between lexicon and syntax. Nestled comfortably under the umbrella of applied linguistics, he authored a solid work of theoretical reflection, among which we can highlight El gest poètic, La frontera literària: dotze discursos sobre el discurs, Elements de lingüística per al discurs literari (with Dominique Maingueneau), De la fraseologia a la lingüística aplicada, Paraula i cultura de la salut: indagacions de la lingüística mèdica o Contextos, gèneres i estils. His literary and essay work has been recognized with numerous awards.

Vicent Salvador, who maintained friendly bonds with the members of IULA since the foundation of the center, had participated in several seminars and congresses. We remember him fondly through his words:

“Al llarg de la meva vida, el llenguatge ha estat per a mi objecte privilegiat de reflexió, de fascinació, d’inquietud”.
"Throughout my life, language has been for me a privileged object of reflection, of fascination, of restlessness".
