IULA mourns the death of Louis-Jean Rousseau

02.05.2023

On April 8, 2023, Louis-Jean Rousseau passed away in Roanne (France), due to covid. He worked from 1972 to 2011 at the Office québécois de la langue française (OFQL) and, during the period 2002-2005, he was entrusted with the task of promoting linguistic diversity within the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie.

Having retired a few years ago, he continued to be involved in what he said was the natural progression of his linguistic interests: terminology. He was one of the founders of the REALITER network of terminology and neology of Romance languages, he collaborated in the ISO Committee 37 and his career was always linked to initiatives related to terminology and terminographic projects, which began with the creation of the Quebec terminology database, now known as the Grand dictionnaire terminologique. He was also secretary of the Terminology Commission of the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA) from 1978 to 1982 and general secretary of the RINT network (Réseau international de néologie et de terminologie) from 1989 to 2001.

Because of his active involvement in the REALITER network, many of the members of IULA and, in particular, of the IULATERM group had the pleasure of meeting him and sharing his kindness and experience in terminology and neology.
