The linguist Jean-Claude Corbeil (Montreal 1932-2022) passed away last week. Corbeil, PhD from the University of Strasbourg (France) and professor for many years in the Linguistics Department of the University of Montreal (Canada), is widely recognized as the driving force behind Quebec’s language policy.

From 1970 to 1977, he was director of the Office québécoise de la langue française; from 1980 to 1988, he was appointed secretary general of the Conseil international de recherche et d’étude en linguistique fondamentale et appliquée; from 1988 to 1991, he served as advisor to the Conseil de la langue française de Québec; and from 1995 to 2000, he was deputy minister responsible for the implementation of language policy. This long trajectory allows us to say that Jean-Claude Corbeil was responsible for all the major milestones of Quebec language policy: the Loi de la langue officielle (1974), the Charte de la langue française (1977), the Larose Commission (2000-2001) for the analysis of the situation and the future of language in Quebec. He was completing the updating of the linguistic legislation in Quebec.

He is known as the one who first introduced the concepts of aménagement linguistique and the professional profile of the langagier, as well as the one who renewed the notion of linguistic norm. He is known by the public for being the author of highly popular lexicographic works, especially the Dictionnaire thématique visuel, adapted to more than 35 languages, including Catalan.

In Catalonia we got to know him because of his participation in the series of conferences on Applied Linguistics, held at the Science Museum of Barcelona in 1989, organized by Teresa Cabré and Lluís Payrató. Corbeil has been a reference for research and terminology and language planning activities in our country, always approachable, always affable.

For the group IULATERM it was a pleasure to accept to participate in the tribute to the 60th anniversary of Teresa Cabré, with the chapter “Coopération Catalogne-Québec et aménagement linguistique” published in Estudis de lingüística i de lingüística aplicada en honor de M. Teresa Cabré Castellví. Vol. 1: De mestres (Lorente, M.; Estopà, R.; Freixa, J.; Martí, J.; Tebé, C. (eds.), 2007).
