Negacionisme, voted neologism of the year 2021

21.12.2021

The Observatory of Neology (OBNEO) of the Department of Translation and Language Sciences of the Pompeu Fabra University and the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (IEC) have launched for the eighth year in a row an open call to participate in the election of the neologism of the year.

From this year’s list of ten candidates, negacionisme and podcast have been competing for the first place during the whole voting period, but finally negacionisme has won, with only twenty-one votes more than podcast. Cisgènere and distòpic -a, placed third and fourth, obtained more than a thousand votes. Antivacunes and presencialitat, placed fifth and sixth, obtained more than 8% of the votes, and edatisme, disfòbia, cronificar and monodosi obtained, respectively, 6.1%, 4.5%, 4.1% and 3.8% of the votes.

In this edition 8045 people voted, the youngest being born in 2011 (10 years old) and the oldest in 1932 (89 years old), distributed in the following age ranges: 51.4% are between 10 and 30 years old, 23% are between 30 and 50 years old, 23.6% are between 50 and 70 years old, and 2% are between 70 and 90 years old.

Thus, if the Philological Section of the IEC considers it appropriate, the word negacionisme could soon appear in the Dictionary of the Catalan language, as the winning neologisms of previous years have already done.
