On Thursday 3 June 2021, at the extraordinary plenary session of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC), our colleague M. Teresa Cabré Castellví was elected president by a very large majority of votes. She will lead a team made up of Maria Coromines (Philosophy and Social Sciences Section), Marta Prevosti (Historical-Archaeological Section) and Àngel Messeguer (Science and Technology Section).

M. Teresa Cabré, Emeritus Professor at the UPF and founder of the Institute for Applied Linguistics (IULA-CER), has worked concurrently in recent years as Chair of the Philology Section of the IEC, as Director of the Càtedra Pompeu Fabra (UPF-IEC), as Academic Director of the Online Master's Program in Terminology, (a UPF-specific degree), and as Chair of the Advisory Board of the Observatori de Neologia (Observatory of Neology). She is currently still involved in research with the IULATERM group (Lexicon and Technology), which she created in 1994.

The work program of M. Teresa Cabré as president of the IEC proposes, as fundamental objectives, to modernize the institution, to improve its communications and its social visibility, to manage it in a planned way and to act with transparency and accountability. She is the first woman to be elected president of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans in 114 years of history. In her first statements after her election, M. Teresa Cabré recalled the uniqueness of the institution, which deals with the normative language for all Catalan-speaking territories and which is also a research institute made up of five different sections, with an extraordinary, accumulated knowledge. She has also claimed the role of a State structure that inspired its creation in 1907, by Prat de la Riba, and as a reference for Catalan society.
