The aim of the present Project is the study and analysis of the prose of ideas —the essay and non-fictional prose in a broad sense— during late Francoism and the consolidation of Democracy in Spain (1966-1986). Our goal is to rethink these years of a "cultural transition" by studying and analysing a representative number of cases of essayism in Spain (in literary essay, journalism, philosophy, politics, history and criticism of art, as well as in historiographical reflections). We start from the hypothesis that a certain non-fictional prose reflects the substantial transformations of those years in Spain. But also from the idea that this prose announces, accompanies and guides these changes. However, we will not only address texts as an end in themselves or as cases and examples of a broad sense of prose of ideas. We will also study the figure of the intellectual in the Spanish Transition and we will analyse his position within the cultural field of the moment (publishing world, media…). In addition, the analysis and the cultural and political contextualization of texts and authors will allow us to better understand what in those years was put at stake. All this will be done paying attention to the legacy of the Spanish republican culture and exile and to the resistance against the Franco regime, as well as to the international influences of the moment. The ultimate goal of this Project is to enrich and give greater consistency to the current discussions on the Spanish political Transition, to open new perspectives and concepts in order to understand the complexity of that moment, and to provide knowledge and qualified arguments to the political and cultural debate of recent times about what happened in Spain forty or fifty years ago.
