An educational project with Syrian refugee children in Beqaa Valley (Lebanon), a sustainable farming initiative as a lever for empowering Ibo women (Mozambique), and the restoration of a drinking water well in Burkina Faso. These are some of the proposals to receive funding under UPF Solidària’s 2022 call for proposals for social engagement and sustainable development projects. The selected projects were awarded grants ranging from €1,500 to €4,900. The money comes from the university’s solidarity fund, whose purpose is to promote initiatives in favour of people, the planet and prosperity.

Participation in this year’s edition was amongst the highest ever, with a total of 35 proposals received. All the participating organizations have ties to members of the UPF university community, including: nine students, seven teaching and research staff members, six administrative and service staff members, and thirteen alumni.

The selected projects were awarded grants ranging from €1,500 to €4,900. The money comes from the university’s solidarity fund, whose purpose is to promote initiatives in favour of people, the planet and prosperity

The initiatives had to promote one of the call’s strategic areas, such as education, international cooperation, or local social engagement activities for groups at risk of social exclusion. The evaluation committee, chaired by the vice-rector for Social Commitment and Sustainability, Ester Oliveras, evaluated the proposals taking into account the viability and sustainability of the resources to carry out the project, the applicant group’s experience with development cooperation, and the beneficiary community’s involvement in the project’s management.

The 21 proposals to receive funding focus their activities in various countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Specifically, they will be carried out in Senegal, Mozambique, Gambia, Burkina Faso, Madagascar and Mali, in Africa; the Philippines, Afghanistan and Lebanon in Asia and the Middle East; and Brazil and Bolivia in Latin America. Finally, five of the projects will be carried out in Barcelona and its metropolitan area.
