The double bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting and Applied Languages combines the two qualifications. These are two qualifications that share a common interest regarding language knowledge and its application in different areas of society. However, their approach is different in that they place the emphasis on certain theoretical and practical elements which set them apart from one another. The bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting is focused primarily on translation and language mediation; while the bachelor’s degree in Applied Languages emphasises the application of language in different professional spheres. They are, therefore, two different study programmes that complement one another in terms of the training they offer. The double bachelor’s degree thereby provides training that gives access to a broad range of career prospects in widely diverse professional, social or institutional settings in which an advanced knowledge of languages and their applications can offer a response to the changing needs of a globalised world.
The two bachelor’s degrees that are combined in this double qualification have new syllabuses (as of the beginning of the academic year 2019-2020). The training offered on this double degree course has thereby been updated to meet the demands of the new needs of the employment market.

I will achieve higher levels of English and another language —French, German or Catalan Sign Language—, with compulsory placements at a prestigious foreign university.
I will be able to work as a specialised translator in the cultural and creative industries, audiovisual and biomedical sectors, public administration, corporations, legal firms, the media, etc.
I will be able to work as language mediator as a simultaneous, liaison or consecutive interpreter.
I will be able to obtain the qualification to practice as a sworn translator.
I will learn to resolve problems of text editing, revision and correction in Catalan, Spanish and my chosen languages, in the traditional and new media.
I will master the use of computer-assisted tools and translation systems that are most commonly required by translation agencies.

The case study method will allow me to learn, through real examples, about the different relationships between language and education, business, technology and society.
The objectives of the double bachelor’s degree are those of the individual degrees in Translation and Interpreting and Applied Languages.
The bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting aims to give translation and language mediation professionals a very strong command of their own languages (Spanish and Catalan) and two foreign languages. Students further their mastery of their working languages (their native and non-native languages), as well as their techniques and strategies for general and specialised translation and the application of this knowledge in diverse professional settings in language mediation.
Students must choose two languages from those offered (English, German, French and Catalan Sign Language); there is also the chance to begin learning a third language.
The bachelor’s degree in Applied Languages aims to give linguistics and language professionals a sound understanding of the human capacity for language and the relationships that exist between language, discourse, culture, society and technology, with the ultimate aim of applying this knowledge to solving problems in a diverse range of professional settings.
The competences acquired on the double degree are:
An excellent command of students’ own language(s) both in terms of writing and speaking
A receptive and productive command of two foreign languages, in terms of both writing and speaking and in different academic and/or professional areas
A knowledge of the cultures of the foreign languages being studied
The ability to reflect on the mechanisms of language
The ability to reflect on the translation process
Translation of texts of a general nature
Interpreting oral texts in simulated situations (the basics in conference interpreting; mastery of the techniques for liaison interpreting)
A knowledge of the diverse areas of specialised translation
The ability to translated texts in at least one specialist field
An understanding of the terminology in at least one specialist field in at least one language combination
The ability to use software tools applied to language mediation, including the mastery of techniques in assisted translation and localisation
The ability to search for and manage information and documentation needed to carry out a translation
Master the professional, legal and financial aspects of the professional spheres of translation
The ability to design and manage translation and mediation projects
A knowledge of the cultures of the foreign languages being studied
An ability to describe and analyse the structure, meaning and use of the working languages
An ability to identify language needs in business and institutional environments, and apply this knowledge accordingly
An ability to identify language needs in society and apply this knowledge accordingly
An ability to identify language needs in the area of education and first and second-language learning, and apply this knowledge accordingly
The ability to analyse acts of communication (in all their complexity and with the necessary detail)

Rigor when it comes to revision and quality control in language mediation

The curricular work placements are an optional subject of between 10 and 20 credits. There are also extracurricular, paid work placements of up to 800 hours per year.
There is a compulsory placement in the third year, in the framework of the student exchange agreements of the Erasmus network and other agreements undersigned by UPF. You can apply for a grant to fund this placement during the second year. There is also the chance to undertake a second placement abroad in the fifth year.
