UPF is one of the top universities in Spain for performance, according to the 2022 ranking by the Knowledge and Development Foundation (CyD)

The University, which remains in fourth position, achieves high performance in 24 of the 37 indicators included in this interactive tool and stands out in the dimensions of Research (third place), Education and Learning, and International Outreach. As a novelty, the ranking includes a section of STEM disciplines, for which UPF comes in the top 5 for Mathematics.

UPF is considered the fourth university in Spain for overall performance (tied with the third), the same position it already occupied in the last two editions, according to the CyD 2022 ranking, prepared by the Knowledge and Development Foundation (Fundación CyD), and is among the leading positions in the dimension of Research (3rd).

The list includes a total of 37 indicators (classified according to three levels of performance: high, medium and low), across five broad dimensions: Teaching and learning, Research, Knowledge transfer, International outreach and Contribution to regional development.

Of the 37 indicators included in the ranking, UPF achieves high performance in 24

Of the 37 indicators, Pompeu Fabra University achieves high performance in 24 (one less than last year), 6 scoring at medium level, 5 at a low level, and 2 are without data. This places the university in fourth place overall, behind the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the University of Navarra (both with 28 high performance indicators), and tied with the Autonomous University of Madrid, also with 24 high performance indicators.

Among the five dimensions of the ranking, UPF stands out especially for Research, where it is placed in third position, together with the University of Cantabria: in this dimension, of the 9 indicators, it obtains a high performance in 6. Meanwhile, for Teaching and Learning (high performance in 7 of the 9 indicators) and International Outreach (high performance in 5 of the 7 indicators), UPF also obtains very good scores, despite not being among the top three.

The ninth edition of the ranking, which the CyD Foundation presented today, 15 June, analyses 79 universities in Spain (two more than the previous year), representing 94% of the 84 institutions that teach undergraduate studies in Spain, of which 48 are public and 31 private; with 28 areas of knowledge (including Architecture for the first time) and 3,052 bachelor’s degrees.

As a novelty, this year the ranking has analysed the adaptation of the Spanish university system to the digitization of teaching, STEM disciplines and the evolution of women in academic careers. In the STEM section, the CyD ranking has updated information on ten areas related to STEM teachings (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). In this area, UPF is among the institutions with the highest number of high performance indicators for Mathematics, ranking in the top 5.

An interactive and comparative tool to help make decisions

The CyD ranking, which is the ranking of the Spanish state that includes most universities, uses the philosophy of the European Commission's U-Multirank. Designed on the basis of relative indicators, it aims to be a dynamic, interactive and comparative tool in which the user searches for and selects universities based on categories they consider important, allowing an analysis by fields of knowledge.

Its purpose is to help the different stakeholders in the world of higher education: students, in their decision-making, so that they can choose the university that best suits their interests; universities, so that they can design and develop their strategies, as well as university officers, teachers, researchers, the public administrations, companies and other social agents that wish to establish links with the university.

The data come from various sources, such as those provided directly by the institutions themselves, data from the Ministry of Universities, bibliometric data and patents.
