PhD fellowship position to develop multicellular models and predict articular cartilage regulation in osteoarthritic knee joints

The area of Biomechanics & Mechanobiology (BMMB) of the research unit BCN MedTech, at the Department of Communication and Information Technologies (DTIC) of the University Pompeu Fabra (UPF) offers a PhD Candidate position with full time work contract for a period of up to four years, in the context of the European Research Council Consolidator Grant (ERC CoG) O-Health (101044828). The successful candidate will be in charge of the development of a systems biology model of articular cartilage regulation in healthy and osteoarthritic knee joints. The spatial mapping of cell-cell communications will be targeted, considering the cascade of events and feedback loops between synovitis and articular cartilage damage over time. The modelling will involve an agent-based structural model combined with biological network models, and it will be designed to incorporate both knowledge and biological data. Down to the cartilage level, mechanoregulation events will be explored, from cytoplasmic membrane receptors to nucleus stimulation, with explicit consideration of possible bioenergetics phenomena. The selected researcher will tightly collaborate with a team of computer scientists and biomechanicians.
