PhD scholarship in bioelectricity (electroporation for cancer treatments) |
PhD scholarship in bioelectricity (electroporation for cancer treatments). Research and teaching position within BCN MedTech at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona). The Biomedical Electronics Research Group (http://berg.upf.edu) at Universitat Pompeu Fabra seeks applications from talented students interested in pursuing a PhD on the use of electric fields for treating cancer. You will participate in a number of biomedical engineering studies focused on understanding and applying a novel tumor treatment modality based on the electroporation phenomenon. You will conceive and carry out in silico, in vitro, and in vivo assays in close collaboration with life sciences researchers. Your studies will typically combine in silico modeling and in vitro or in vivo assays. You will participate in international meetings and you will report your results in scientific journals. This PhD scholarship (“Teaching PRC”) will be partially supported by the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC). Its benefits and conditions are available at: https://www.upf.edu/web/etic/predoctoral-research-contracts. Gross monthly salary: 1500€. (To increase to 1900€ during the fourth year of the PhD.) Application deadline: 07/04/2023 |
PhD Position in Explainable Machine Learning for Organ Transplantation |
We are developing new digital solutions to help surgeons assess the suitability of an organ for transplant. In this context, the PhD candidate will develop and validate novel explainable machine learning algorithms to assess solid organ donors from multimodal data (including images) and monitor the health of the organ after transplantation. The candidate will be directly supervised by Prof. Gemma Piella (UPF) and Dr. Concepción Gómez-Gavara (Vall d’Hebron Hospital). Application deadline: 28/02/2023 |
PhD position part of Doctoral Network funded by Horizon Europe (HORIZON) Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions |

Desirable, but not required, are: experience with human-subject experimentation, machine learning, and audio programming (e.g. Pd, Max/MSP) Start date (planned): 1st September 2023 Application deadline: 25th April 2023 Additional information and application: Lullabyte project |
PhD fellowship position to develop multicellular models and predict articular cartilage regulation in osteoarthritic knee joints |
The area of Biomechanics & Mechanobiology (BMMB) of the research unit BCN MedTech, at the Department of Communication and Information Technologies (DTIC) of the University Pompeu Fabra (UPF) offers a PhD Candidate position with full time work contract for a period of up to four years, in the context of the European Research Council Consolidator Grant (ERC CoG) O-Health (101044828). The successful candidate will be in charge of the development of a systems biology model of articular cartilage regulation in healthy and osteoarthritic knee joints. The spatial mapping of cell-cell communications will be targeted, considering the cascade of events and feedback loops between synovitis and articular cartilage damage over time. The modelling will involve an agent-based structural model combined with biological network models, and it will be designed to incorporate both knowledge and biological data. Down to the cartilage level, mechanoregulation events will be explored, from cytoplasmic membrane receptors to nucleus stimulation, with explicit consideration of possible bioenergetics phenomena. The selected researcher will tightly collaborate with a team of computer scientists and biomechanicians. Application deadline: 07/11/2022 |
