Freesound is a collaborative online platform, created in 2005 by the Music Technology research group, (MTG) of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC) at UPF, which allows sound designers, musicians, artists and researchers to exchange sounds under Creative Commons (CC) licences. In all this time, the platform has become established in top slot and has become a well-known resource for various groups that use audio; one of the biggest sound repositories with CC licences in existence.

In 2019, 41,450 new sounds corresponding to 772 hours of audio were added to the platform

One very important aspect that has made the Freesound project sustainable has been the continuous contribution of new sounds by the user community. These sounds give value to Freesound and make it a useful resource for many users around the world. In 2019, 41,450 new sounds corresponding to 772 hours of audio were added to the platform. Regarding the Creative Commons licences, the new sounds are distributed mainly in Creative Commons (CC0) (64%); with attribution (CC-BY) (25%) and non-commercial attribution (CC-BY-NC) (11%).

The number of downloads by users of the platform during 2019 exceeds 20.5 million

“As we had anticipated in 2018, this year Freesound has exceeded 440,000 sounds published. In fact, if someone wished to listen to all the sounds uploaded to Freesound, they would need 274 days and 6 hours of their life to do so”, the MTG members comment. The number of downloads by users of the platform during 2019 exceeds 20.5 million, 20,624,811 downloads of sounds. “With this, Freesound has now accumulated a total of more than 149 million downloads”, they add. Every day more than 150,000 sound searches are recorded on the platform. By preference, the most sought sounds are wind, music and explosions and this year piano and car sounds also feature.

“Equally important for Freesound is the activity of the user community, beyond uploading sounds: sound ratings, comments and forum posts", they explain. In 2019, the Freesound community added 158,000 sound ratings; 19,000 messages were exchanged; there were 1,400 new posts in the forum and 44,000 comments were recorded.

Finally, it should be noted that the University contributes to the Freesound platform by providing the necessary computer infrastructure and basic maintenance.
