Programming in Unreal software engine of virtual and augmented reality interfaces for medical devices- Research Support Staff

The candidate will lead the development of virtual and augmented reality interfaces under the Unreal software environment for medical devices. In particular, the application will be focused on left atrial appendage devices for training of cardiologists and planning of these interventions. The developed interfaces will be tested in hospitals to validate their usability.

Virtual reality interfaces will be developed under the Unreal software environment for headsets such as the HTC Vive Pro, the Hololens 2 and the Oculus Quest 2. The interfaces will be based on the already existing versions available in our research group. Interactive visualisation of the left atrial geometry together with left atrial appendage occluder devices with different settings will be performed in the interfaces. Specifications from clinicians will be gathered, as well as feedback from testing the interfaces in the hospital. Medical image visualisation as MPR but also with volumetric/cinematic rendering should also be included. The ideal candidate should have a core background in (3D) computer graphics skills. Knowledge about cardiac anatomy and the left atrial appendage occluder device is desirable. A proficiency level of English and good communication skills are required due to the multi-disciplinary and international nature of the project and research environment.

Research Assistant position - Deep learning image processing for surgery planning and simulation

Cochlear implantation (CI) is a surgical procedure that, by means of an implantable device, aims to overcome hearing loss by directly stimulating the auditory nerves. Although it is a mature and safe procedure, clinical outcomes vary significantly due to a number of factors, such as anatomical and physiological variability across the population, nerve degeneration, and different implantation strategies. Computer modelling and simulation hold the promise for better, more predictive cochlear implantation.

Our group has been active in this line of work for many years, and the project builds on previous related research efforts, such as the EU project HEAR-EU and the Producte project CIplanner. The aim of the project is to develop deep learning image processing and computer modelling methods and tools for cochlear and vestibular implantation.
