The Universitat Pompeu Fabra Information and Communications Technologies Department (DTIC) hosted last Friday 24th March at the UPF Poblenou Campus Multipurpose Hall, the 5th edition of the Doctoral Student Workshop.

The workshop consisted in an exposition in which pre and post doctoral researchers, presented in public the most recent results of their respective research fields. It is considered an opportunity for doctorate students to network and interact with other researchers, as well as practice the elaboration of posters and the ability to speak in public and gain experience in exposition sessions.

It was an open act to everybody which kept a constant flux of attendants throughout the morning. 61 researchers took part, each of them with their own project, coming from 18 different DTIC research groups. The session was completed with 12 phD students from Queen Mary's School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, London.

During the Symposium, five different awards were granted to the best presentations:

- EiTIC People's Choice Award to the Best Poster, consisting of a travel grant worth up to 1400€ to attend a scientific event related to phD research, to CIERA CROWEL for the poster entitled "Multiplayer Collaboration in Virtual Environments for Children with Autism".

- In second position, a license of Vocaloid MAIKA (DVD edition) to ANTOINE GRIMALDI with the poster entitled "Natural image statistics as a function of dynamic range".

- Maria de Maeztu DTIC-UPF Open Science Award: 1.000€ for further research to MARIUS MIRON for "Training neural networks for classical music source separation" and MONICA DOMINGUEZ with the poster "Praat on the Web: An Upgrade of Praat for Semi-Automatic Speech Annotation".

- mVentures - The Collider Award for Technology Transfer Perspectives: 1.000€ for further research to VICTOR CASAMAYOR for "Act as an intelligent robot, sense like an ant".

- Intelygenz Award for Best Poster in Machine Learning or Mobile: 1.000€ for further research to JORDI PONS for "Thinking a grounded deep learning paradigm for music modeling"

The symposium counted on sponsors and collaborators linked to UPF's research: mVentures - The Collider, Intelygenz and VoctroLabs.
