This past December ERC Consolidator 2020 awarded projects were announced, and of the 10 grants given in Economics, two are for UPF PhD alumni: Christina Felfe and Peter Koudijs. ERC Consolidator grants are worth up to €2 million over 5 years, and support researchers in building their independewnce by establishing a research team and developing a successfull career in Europe. Researchers must have between 7-12 years of experience since completing their PhD, and a track record showing great promise and excellence in research.

Christina Felfe (UPF PhD 2008) is now Professor of Labour Economics at University of Würzburg. She was awarded a Consolidator grant for her project "Early Origins of Social Cohesion in Increasingly Diverse Societies", which will investigate the role of parents, classmates, teachers, and socialisation processes in the formation of child group preferences. The grant will allow her to conduct data collection in schools throughout Germany, and starting in 2022 she will interview several thousand children and their parents in order to conduct state-of-the-art methods in experimental economics and psychology. The goal of her project will be to measure children’s group belonging and children’s behaviour towards their own and other groups.

Peter Koudijs (UPF PhD 2011) was Associate Professor of Finance at Stanford University since his graduation, but in 2020 he returned to Europe to teach at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam. His project, "One of Man’s Greatest Inventions? Historical Insights into Limited Liability", asks what the actual effects are of providing limited liability for business owners. The goal of his project is to theoretically and empirically investigate the effects of limited liability on companies, both non-financials and banks. The central research question is: What is the optimal level of limited liability for owners and managers that stimulates growth, while limiting moral hazard? The ERC project will use 19th and 20th century historical data as a research laboratory.

The European Research Council, set up by the European Union in 2007, is the premiere European funding organisation for excellent frontier research. Every year, it selects and funds the very best, creative researchers of any nationality and age to run projects based in Europe.
