Andreu Mas-Colell, Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics and Business of the UPF, has won the 2018 IEF Financial Excellence Award in the field of Academic Careers. The honour was bestowed this past November by the Institute of Financial Studies (Institut d'Estudis Financers, IEF).

The award recognises Prof. Mas-Colell's achievement in academic training, values, strategies, and innovation, and for his efforts in promoting the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (GSE) as a graduate school of excellence.

The IEF is a private foundation in the Catalan and Spanish financial and economics sectors. It works to advance competitiveness, efficiency, internationalisation, and new initiatives both academically and professionally. The IEF Financial Excellence Awards have been presented since 2008.

Before coming to the UPF in 1995, Prof. Mas-Colell taught Economics at Harvard, and prior to that, Economics and Mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley. More recently he has also served as Chairman of the Barcelona GSE.

Prof. Mas-Colell has written some 100 research papers on subjects ranging from abstract general equilibrium theory and the structure of financial markets to pricing policy for public firms. He is the author of The Theory of General Economic Equilibrium: A Differentiable Approach (Cambridge University Press, 1985) and co-author with M. Whinston and J. Green, of the graduate textbook Microeconomic Theory (Oxford University Press, 1994).
