The ranking of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China), known as the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), has recently published its classification according to academic disciplines (Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2018). It is a foretaste of its global ranking, one of the world’s most recognized university rankings.

In what is a good example of the transversality of its studies and research, UPF has fifteen academic disciplines in the ranking spread across the total of four knowledge areas: Social Sciences (7 disciplines), Medical Sciences (4), Engineering (3) and Life Sciences (2).

UPF has seventeen academic disciplines in the ranking, spread across the total of five knowledge areas included in the classification

Regarding the position of the seventeen disciplines, Public Health is notable in 28th place compared to being among the top 150 in the world in the 2017 edition. Economics and Biotechnology remain among the top 75, while Political Sciences and Biological Sciences are in the top 100, whereas last year they were placed among the top 75 and 150, respectively.

The rest of the academic disciplines taught at Pompeu Fabra University to feature in the Shanghai ranking are as follows: Environmental Engineering, Statistics, Communication and  Medical Technology (in the top 150); Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (in the top 200); and Management, Business Administration, Computer and Engineering Sciences, Human Biological Sciences, and Clinical Medicine (in the top 300).

The best universities that teach 54 academic disciplines

The Shanghai ranking includes a total of 54 academic disciplines of which, depending on the discipline, it lists between the top 200 and 500 institutions around the world that teach them. For inclusion in the ranking (the list sorts over 4,000 universities in order of excellence) the centres must have a minimum number of research publications for the period 2012-2016. The publication threshold is different according to the themes, and the bibliometric data are gathered from Web of Science and InCites.

The ARWU methodology sorts the academic institutions according to five criteria: the number of scientific articles published; their impact according to a standardized index of citations; the percentage of articles that appeared in international publications; the number of papers selected by prestigious journals and conferences, and the number of researchers at the institution that have achieved a prestigious award like the Nobel Prize or a Fields Medal.
