The coronavirus pandemic has revealed the deep interconnection between human behaviour and zoonotic diseases, especially between human diet and other socioeconomic vectors that affect the environment. Six out of every ten infectious diseases can spread from non-human animals, and three-quarters of all new human diseases originated in other animals.

“Neither pangolins, nor bats, nor animals of other species deserve to be blamed for something whose main cause is human behaviour”

Covid-19 is no exception. “How we treat non-human animals directly (hunting, exploiting them in farms, trafficking them, etc.) or indirectly (through human pressure and the pollution of their habitats, resources and the environment in general) is at the heart this crisis”, reveals Núria Almiron, co-director of the Centre for Animal Ethics (UPF-CAE) and lecturer at the UPF Department of Communication.

Go beyond the epidemiological causes of pandemics and epidemics of a zoonotic nature and also consider the socio-structural variables that drive them

UPF-CAE has launched an information platform that identifies more than 200 scientific and journalistic works connecting zoonotic diseases, such as covid-19, with the treatment of other animals by humans.

The aim of this literature review is to highlight the need to go beyond the epidemiological causes of pandemics and epidemics of a zoonotic nature and also consider the socio-structural variables that drive them. As the members of the UPF-CAE point out: “Neither pangolins, nor bats, nor animals of other species deserve to be blamed for something whose main cause is human behaviour”.

This information platform helps to establish the connection between how humans treat other animals and the emergence of zoonotic diseases. The resource has been updated in March 2021 and contains books, scientific papers and press articles for researchers, journalists, policy-makers and the general public.
