A special issue published dealing with the press and the political transitions in Spain and Portugal in the 1970s
It is part of project that a team of researchers at the Department of Communication, led by professor Jaume Guillamet, has been working on for ten years. A commissioned work available in the International Journal of Iberian Studies.
For ten years, a team of researchers at the UPF Department of Communication led by Jaume Guillamet has been investigating the relationship between the press and the political transition in Spain. After three consecutive projects funded by the Spanish MINECO, this group of researchers has published several articles and books on the subject and presented the results of their research at the world’s most important academic forums dealing with the history of journalism. Thus, two years ago the indexed journal International Journal of Iberian Studies (Intellect UK) commissioned a special double issue on the press and the political transitions in Spain and Portugal in the 1970s.
The result is the publication led by Christopher Tulloch (UPF) and Rita Luis (Institute of Contemporary History, Lisbon) that has just been published and includes contributions by Francesc Salgado and Cristina Perales (UPF) together with researchers from the Complutense University of Madrid, the Pontifical University of Salamanca, the University of Castilla-La Mancha and NOVA University of Lisbon.
The work is structured around seven articles in which Javier Muñoz (Complutense of Madrid), Cristina Perales-Garcia (UPF), and Pepe Reig (UCLM) offer overviews of the printed media and press, Francesc Salgado analyses the fundamental role of satirical magazines, while Gloria García González (US) explains the special relevance of La Calle and Triunfo. The situation in Spain is complemented by a further two works on the transition in Portugal: Rita Luis speaks about the agency Inter Press Service and Marco Gomes offers an in-depth analysis of the revolutionary language used in the newspapers Diário de Notícias and Esquerda Socialista.
The International Journal of Iberian Studies is the academic journal of the Association for Contemporary Iberian Studies whose honorary president is full professor and Hispanist Paul Preston of the London School of Economics (UK).
