UPF, best Spanish University according to the Times Higher Education ranking

In the 2021 edition of the World University Rankings, UPF comes 152nd in the world and 65th in Europe. The University excels in the field of citations (96th in the world) and has improved its results for knowledge transfer.

According to the recently published Times Higher Education 2021 edition of the World University Rankings, published recently, UPF is ranked 152nd worldwide, 65th in Europe, and first in Spain. In last year’s edition, the University achieved 143rd worldwide and 60th in Europe, and also led the table in Spain.

For the sixth year in a row, UPF remains among the top 200 institutions in the world

These results mean that for the sixth year in a row (since 2016) the University ranks among the top 200 institutions in the world. UPF had already reached such heights in the 2013 edition, dropping out in 2015, though remaining in the top 225, while in 2019 it obtained its best result reaching 135th position.

The seventeenth edition of the THE World University Rankings, which this year includes over 1,500 universities belonging to 93 countries, is produced from a combination of thirteen indicators measuring institutions’ performance in five major areas: teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (30%), international outlook (7.5%) and knowledge transfer (2.5%).

UPF remains in the top 100 for citations and improves for transfer

The University, which scored 57.4 points overall (four tenths of a percentage points less than last year, with 57.8) remains among the top 100 institutions in the world (ranked 96) in the field of citations in scientific publications, for which it was awarded 93.8 points out of a maximum of 100.

Noteworthy is the improvement in the field of knowledge transfer, rising from 44.5 points in the 2020 rankings to 50.9 in the 2021 edition. As for the other indicators (international outlook, 65.8; research, 39.6, and teaching, 36.9) they are down slightly on last year, by less than a point in all three cases.

In the five indicators, UPF features among the 25% of universities in the ranking that have obtained the best results.

 

Results at state and international level

If we focus on Spain, behind UPF come the Autonomous University of Barcelona (182nd) and the University of Barcelona (198th), followed by the  University of Navarra (251-300 bracket) and the Autonomous University of Madrid (301-350). This year features a total of 50 Spanish universities, five more than last year.

Overall, the University of Oxford (UK) is ranked first for the fifth consecutive year, followed by the universities of Stanford, Harvard, CalTech and the MIT, all in the USA.

The Times Higher Education ranking, as well as being a pioneer in the international arena (with the ranking drawn up by Shanghai University and the company QS), is an industry benchmark.
