Ricardo Baeza Yates, Premio Nacional de Informática (national computer science award) 2018

Awarded by the Spanish Computer Science Society (SCIE) - BBVA Foundation that distinguishes the excellent research and entrepreneurial career of the professor, who has been an ICREA research professor with the Department of Information and Communication Technologies.

The members of the jury of the Spanish Computer Science Society Research Awards (SCIE)- BBVA Foundation 2018 that met on May 7 2018 at the headquarters of the BBVA Foundation in Madrid, decided to grant one of the three National Computer Science Awards, specifically the Ángela Ruiz Robles award, to professor Ricardo Baeza Yates, ICREA professor at Pompeu Fabra University

and, since 2017, CEO of NTENT Hispania: “for his excellent research and entrepreneurial career, for having promoted the transfer of high-quality knowledge and having encouraged the creation of employment, the opening of new markets, and excellence in computer engineering”.

Baeza Yates stated “we must learn the importance of industrial research and technology transfer in order to compete throughout the world. This award is in recognition of my work in Barcelona to try to prove this during the last fourteen years”, said professor Baeza Yates.

Ricardo Baeza Yates received his PhD at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada in 1989. He was an ICREA research professor at the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC) at UPF from December 2004 until the end of 2010. As of 2011 he became a part-time full professor at the same department in the University. He was the founder of the research group on Web in 2005, which he directed until 2017, when it was renamed Web Science & Social Computing. He is currently CEO of NTENT (Spain) and CTO of NTENT in California, a semantic search technology company based in California, and part-time director of the postgraduate programmes in computer science at Northeastern University in Silicon Valley (USA).

He is co-author of the most cited book on information retrieval (Addison-Wesley, 1999), whose second edition, dating from 2011, was awarded the prize for the best book of the year by the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T). He has received awards from the Organization of American States (1993), the Institute of Engineers in Chile (1994), the University of Waterloo (Graham Medal, 2007) and from the Association of Engineers in Chile (2010). He has also presided the CLEI (Centro Llatinoamericano de Estudios en Informática - Latin American Computer Science Study Centre), been a member of the ACM and of the IEEE-Computer Society, and international coordinator of the applied computing and electronics subprogramme of the CYTED (Iberoamreican Cooperation Programme). Since 2010 he has been a founding member of the

 

Academy of Engineering of Chile. In 2009 he was appointed ACM Fellow and in 2011 IEEE Fellow.
