The Ciutadella campus is to host the European congress on immigration early in July

Under the title “Europe, migrations and the Mediterranean: human mobilities and intercultural challenges”, this is the annual meeting of the IMISCOE network. It is to take place from 2 to 4 July and is organized by GRITIM-UPF, with over 700 participants in attendance.

The Mediterranean is the centre of migration studies in Europe and is currently a focal point for large-scale human displacements. It is part of a global and local challenge with major effects on the countries of origin and destination in terms of society and politics, and with major implications for policies on borders and diversity and geopolitical strategies.

Pompeu Fabra University, through the GRITIM-UPF research group, is organizing the 15th IMISCOE Annual Conference (International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion), the biggest network of researchers in Europe in the field of migration and integration. Under the title “Europe, migrations and the Mediterranean: human mobilities and intercultural challenges”, it will be held from 2 to 4 July 2018 on the Ciutadella campus.

The aim of the meeting, which is already open for registrations (until June 1) is to create synergies between the experts that facilitate the development of public research programmes and policies on migration in the Mediterranean. It also aims to highlight the geographical dimension of migration and approach human mobilities as a reality, a resource and an opportunity to connect societies and cities in this area.

According to Ricard Zapata-Barrero, full professor at the Department of Political and Social Sciences at UPF, director of  GRITIM-UPF and president of the congress, “at this meeting we will analyse the causes and consequences of human mobility in the Mediterranean and the importance of having a city-based approach, in contact the diversity management, by means of an intercultural policy paradigm”.

The congress will also look at specific areas of migration studies, such as transnationalism, superdiversity, solidarity, dispersion and co-development, and link them with broader ideas about human rights, democracy and liberalism. Linking Mediterranean and migration studies and expanding the availability of disciplines involved will be crucial.

More than 700 participants are expected, including both young and senior researchers, at an event that will feature more than 130 sessions including research panels, workshops on immigration, book workshops and working sessions for IMISCOE research groups and permanent committees. “The contributions of all of them, in the framework of a unique collaborative environment, will doubtless help the scientific development of human mobility and diversity studies”, says Ricard Zapata-Barrero.

Creation of a research network on Mediterranean studies and migration

“The Annual Conference will be a good opportunity to find out the status of the current research agenda on migration in the Mediterranean and to plan for the future”, says Ricard Zapata-Barrero. During the Conference, a research network on Mediterranean studies and migration will be set up, consisting of countries and research centres from southern and northern Mediterranean. it will be coordinated by GRITIM-UPF, with the support of IMISCOE and the Union for the Mediterranean.

“I hope that this event will promote a coordinated approach by the entire region to increase the mobility of researchers and students and to establish common platforms for the collection and analysis of data, as well as serve to make better use of the existing tools”, concludes Ricard Zapata-Barrero.
