The 2017 edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), better known as the Shanghai ranking, places Pompeu Fabra University within the 201 to 300 bracket, an improved result on the previous edition consolidating the University’s progression in this classification.

UPF, which in the last edition came in the 301 to 400 bracket, particularly stands out in the fields of Economics and Business (in which it is in the 51-75 bracket) and in Computer Science (151-200). It also excels in the Social Sciences (among the top 100 universities in the world).

According to the ARWU, UPF comes in first position in the State, in conjunction with the University of Barcelona (UB) and the University of Granada. Other universities such as the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Madrid, the Complutense of Madrid and the Universities of Santiago de Compostela come in the following segment (301-400).

Since 2003, the Centre for World-Class Universities and the Institute of Higher Education at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China) have drafted this annual report which reviews the scientific and academic output of more than 1,000 universities.

Through its website, they show the results of the top 500 universities around the world, according to bibliometric indicators on their academic and research activities, and publish the data broken down into five areas of knowledge (broad subject fields) and five fields (broad fields).

Hegemony of North American and British universities

As in previous years, the universities of North America and Britain monopolize the top of the rankings: Harvard, Stanford and Cambridge make up the podium. Since the ranking was created, US universities have maintained their hegemony: eight of the top ten are in the United States.

Six indicators to draw up the ranking

The indicators used (this ranking does not evaluate scientific output and gives great importance to prizes and awards accumulated over time) and their relative values are as follow: Alumni (10%): number of former students who have a Nobel prize or Fields MedalAward (20%): active professors with Nobel prizes or Fields MedalsHICi (20%): researchers highly cited in the ISI, considering the 21 categories into which publications are classified.

The other three indicators are N&S (20%): articles published in the journals Nature and Science in the last five years; PUB (20%): scientific publications indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) of the ISI; and finally, PCP (10%): this introduces a correction factor of the above according to the size of the institution calculated on the basis of full-time equivalent teaching staff.
