Abstract:

My research focuses on the relation between populism and technocracy. These concepts are usually described as being opposed. Yet, it might be more useful to see them as parallel responses to the same structural problems. In fact, they might even appear together as a sort of technocratic-populism. In order to better understand the relation between populism and technocracy, I am conducting interviews with politicians and discourse analysis of political texts. My case studies are Podemos and Vox (Spain), Movimento Cinque Stelle and Lega (Italy), En Marche and Rassemblement National (France). I expect three of these parties to be characterizable as part of a national-populist party family, and the other three as part of a nascent technocratic-populist party family.
