By Resolution of June 8, 2017, the favorable resolutions of the ministerial R & D projects corresponding to the State Program for the Promotion of Scientific and Technical Research of Excellence were made official. Two projects coordinated by the CINEMA group have been beneficiaries of a grant to finance the research. The projects are the following ones:

Female desire in the Spanish cinema during franquism: gestural evolution of the actress under the constraint censorship. (Main researchers: Núria Bou Sala, Xavier Pérez Torío)

The present project has as object of study the representation of female desire in the Spanish cinema during franquism, as of its most meaningful actresses interpretative gestures. Such gestural is aimed to be put in relation with censorship strategies in force in Spain during the dictatorship. In these project our concern is to tackle the actress expressive system (body, face, gesture and gaze as elements of the performative game) with regard to the representation of female desire. Such analysis will also include the study of narrative elements that allowed channelling better this expression of the desire, despite the censor vigilance always existing during franquism. Moreover, it is started from the hypothesis that filmic narrations settled a number of women models that coexisted and evolved throughout decades. The research raises, in this regard, and in a diachronic key, the changes in the expression of female desires during the dictatorship, as they were incarnated by a meaningful selection of actresses.

Visual motifs in the public sphere. Production and circulation of images of power in Spain, 2011-2017 (Main researchers: Jordi Balló Fantova, Ivan Pintor Iranzo)

The project has as object of study the recurrence, production and circullation of specific motifs related with the representation of power in images (both still and moving) released in the press, digital media and television in Spain between 2011 and 2017. This project draws upon the premise that the images that represent power in media and other public sphere discourses are based on visual motifs. These not only exist in artistic works such as statues and paintings but they frequently appear in newsreels or or the images of photojournalism, among other examples.  The main hypothesis is that, underneath the images that we consume in contemporary media everyday, there is a systematized series of visual motifs that represent common situations of public life, from the seize of power in presidential inaugurations, to the depiction of corporate bankrupt, or the occupation of a public square.
