The LASA international congress, dedicated to spreading and discussing Latin-American Studies, has been held this year in Barcelona, dedicating presentations to the general theme “Latin-American Studies in the Global World”. From that common framework, the congress has offered visions on the perception of Latin America from diverse regions and on the manner in which Latin-American Studies manage to actively contribute to understanding similar processes and issues worldwide. In short, to assess Latin American historical and social paradigms in comparison to diverse current difficulties, beyond a specific regional sphere, such as the development of democracies, the export of resources, migration and political exiles or such phenomena as populism or authoritarianism in its different aspects.

The area occupied in Cinematographic Studies, coordinated by Michael Lazzara (University of California, Davis) and Pablo Piedras (University of Buenos Aires, National Council of Scientific and Technical Investigations and National University of Arts) hosted the presentation “Crónicas de indias. Joint libraries in the film adaptation “Zama” by Lucrecia Martel”, presented by Santiago Fillol on Saturday 26th of May, together with Nora Catelli and Annaliza Mirizio.

Starting from the novel by Antonio Di Benedetto, and considering the distinctive hallmarks that Lucrecia Martel brings in her adaptation, Santiago Fillol goes over the canonical forms in which the Crónicas de indias and the meeting with otherness have been interpreted by the cinema, in order to reach Zama and discuss the manner in which this dialogue is revealed in Martel’s film.
