 March 22nd and 23rd, 2023

Faculty of Philology and Communication of the University of Barcelona l Filmoteca de Catalunya

On Tuesday 22nd March and Wednesday 23rd March, Dr. Annalisa Mirizio, member of the CINEMA group, will coordinate –together with Carlo Alberto Petruzzi– a seminar on the work of Carmelo Bene organised by the research group GLiCiArt (Research Group on Literature, Cinema and Other Artistic Languages of the University of Barcelona). The seminar will take place at the Faculty of Philology and Communication of the University of Barcelona, and Dr. Albert Elduque, member of the CINEMA group and professor at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, will also participate. The activity has the collaboration of the Filmoteca de Catalunya, where Bene's work will be screened in the afternoons.

The Seminar “Carmelo Bene Against Representation: Pages, Scenarios, Images” brings together, for the first time at the University of Barcelona, international critics and specialists who share an interest in the work of one of the greatest artists of the second half of the 20th century. Together with the retrospective at the Filmoteca de Catalunya, the Seminar's interventions will allow us to analyse the critical legacy of a creative proposal that destabilised the Italian scene and turned Bene into a powerful extra-territorial force.

Author

Carmelo Bene (1937-2002) was a tireless researcher. He constructed each of his works as an operation against spectacle and consumption. As an actor he wanted to make the theatrical stage the place of the impossibility of representation; as a filmmaker he refused to make cinema a means of communication. He always reminded his audience that impossibility is the only proper artistic experience and contradiction the only form of authenticity in art.
