The +RAIN Film Fest, the first European film festival with AI, will take place during the entire day of 14 June on the Poblenou campus of the UPF. It will offer various activities to approach narratives generated with artificial intelligence and their ethical, aesthetic and political possibilities and implications. Since experimenting with the creation and research processes of an emerging technology such as generative AI, +RAIN proposes discussions with experts, authors, watching films and experiencing audiovisual and musical performances generated with artificial intelligence.

There are three sections open to participation by all stakeholders with prior registration: RESEARCH (the morning of conferences and round tables), FEST (the cinema afternoon) and LIVE (the concert evening). The FEST has been co-directed by Alan Salvadó and has Miriam Sánchez Manzano, the predoctoral researcher of the CINEMA group, among its advisory and executive committee.

+RAIN Film Fest is a transdisciplinary project organised by the Department of Communications, the Department of Information and Communications Technologies and the Arsenal ecosystem, all of which are from Pompeu Fabra University. From the University, the festival also has the financial support and collaboration of the UPF Social Council and the UPF Ventures collaboration.
In the next few days, the selected films from among the 48 nominations presented from up to 15 different countries and the names of the international jury that will award the awards will be announced.

The +RAIN Film Fest program

The following summarizes the main contents of each of the festival's sections and the timetables in which they will take place during the day of Wednesday 14 June.

RESEARCH

From 9.00 am to 13.30 am: AI talks in content creation

It will have presentations and round tables on the future of AI in the creation of digital content and its impact on the media sector. It deals with aspects such as the narrative ability of AI tools, the ethical use of AI, creativity, copyright, or redefinition of the same concept of author and author.
It is attended by recognised experts in the study of the AI impact in the field of art and communication, such as Joanna Zylinska, who will discuss non-human images and address issues such as the following: Are they creative machines? Another of the participants will be Andrea Guzman, an expert on human-machine relations, who will reflect on how we talk about AI and the communication challenges in this area. It will focus especially on the metaphors used to refer to this topic. There will be experts in the field of ethics and will also be involved in the development and editing of cinematographic tools such as Cristóbal Valenzuela, CEO and co-founder of Runway, a generative video startup; Bill Cusick, creative director of Stability IA; or Víctor Pérez, student of the UPF, co-founder of Krea, a creative image platform for creative people.

FEST

From 16:30 to 20:00: AI-generated films and discussions with their authors

Artificial intelligence-generated films will be screened and discussions will be held with authors to explain the process of creation, the generative applications used and identify aesthetic possibilities of the experimental use of emerging technology and the implications for the future of film language.
Selected films from the international festival call will be shown. Out of the contest, a selection of the films presented at the first edition of the AI Film Festival that Runway organised in February this year in New York will be visible. The short films of the two sections, the participating authors and the members of the international jury will be announced shortly.

LIVE

From 20:00 to 23:00 am: evening of music and audiovisuals generated with AI

The research and experimentation processes with artificial intelligence to generate music and audiovisual products are the starting point of the live performatic proposals. The boundaries between disciplines, languages, genders and identities are being overtaken in projects on human-machine relations such as Albert Barqué-Duran's "Slowly fading into Data", and Anna Xambó's proposed live-coding that, inspired by the space of the Poblenou campus (located in an old factory), reflects on the evolutionary construction of history with the generation of sounds. Also noteworthy is the release of the Transformer, created by the UPF Music Technology Group (MTG) research group, which will play Raül Refree; or the proposals of the more than recognized Jennifer Walshe or Nao Tokui, who will close the party after the awards of the awards to the festival's films.
