A pilot course lays the foundations for integrating science communication into doctoral training

Gema Revuelta, director of the CCS-UPF, has led the academic direction of the pilot course on Public Communication of Science promoted by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE), a pioneering initiative aimed at integrating these competencies into doctoral training in Spain.
The course, held in April at FECYT’s headquarters, brought together 30 PhD candidates from across the country for an intensive training programme combining strategic reflection, public engagement and hands-on communication practice based on their own research projects.
The teaching team included Carolina Moreno-Castro, Bienvenido León, Carolina Llorente Lope, Francisco Javier Alonso Flores, Lluís Montoliu, Ángela Monasor, Rocío López Íñigo, Manuel Franco, Laura Chaparro Domínguez and Elena Lázaro Real, a group of science communication experts bringing complementary perspectives from different fields.
The course was very well received by participants, who highlighted both the practical usefulness of the content and the importance of shared reflection spaces. This positive response points to a new generation of researchers committed to a more open, plural and socially engaged science.
This training goes beyond communication skills, focusing also on attitudes and social commitment, and represents a first step towards the progressive implementation of a common science communication training programme across Spanish universities
