For the first time, the Master’s degree on Personalized Medicine and Health Applied Bioinformatics of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) will be taught in Barcelona, organized by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC).

This master’s degree has been offered with different formats since 2005, and in the last three editions its focus has been on the analysis and interpretation of results on massive sequencing in health environments. The edition for 2019-20 will continue along the same lines, growing with a new location in Barcelona.

According to Alfonso Valencia, co-director of the master’s degree, “this master’s degree answers the growing demand for professionals trained in the necessary computational techniques to manage the introduction of genomics in the medicine of the future. This demand is particularly strong in Barcelona, due to the huge growth of the biomedical sector”. Fátima Al-Shahrour, co-director of the master’s degree, also states that “the more than 200 students that have attended this master’s degree are the best example of the easiness with which they have accessed the labour market in research centers, companies and hospitals”.

The pre-inscription term has already started and it will end in July 15th. The classes will begin in October 2019, will be finished by May 2020 and they will take place in the afternoons between Monday and Thursday. The first phase, with a total of 240 hours, will be mainly practical. For the second phase, with 270 hours, students will carry out a final project in clinical centers or biotechnology companies.

This specialization is addressed to doctors, biologists or biotechnologists, among other professionals interested in the analysis and results’ interpretation of massive sequencing, as well as mathematicians, statisticians or engineers interested in the application of informatics to health related problems.

In this official qualification of the Escuela Nacional de Sanidad (ENS) of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS), the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas (CNIO) and the Sociedad Española de Biotecnología (SEBiot) are participating, and in the case of Barcelona’s edition there is also the collaboration of the UPF and IDIBAPS/Hospital Clínic.

The master degree’s directors are Alfonso Valencia, ICREA Professor and director of the Life Sciences department of the BSC, and Fátima Al-Shahrour, director of the Bioinformatic unit at CNIO. Barcelona’s edition is coordinated by Ferran Casals, head of the UPF's Genomics Uni, with the collaboration of Juan Ignacio Aróstegui (Hospital Clínic), Ivon Cuscó (Vall d’Hebron Institut de Recerca), and Miguel Ponce de León (BSC).
