The Times Higher Education ranking is based on a combination of 13 indicators, corresponding to five major areas weighted as follows: teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (30%), international outlook (7.5%), and industry income (2.5%). In the 15th edition, UPF improved in in almost all the areas, especially teaching (where its score rose from 34.7 to 40); however, it also saw slight improvements in research, international outlook and industry income. Although its score for the citations indicator (which measures the impact of publications and, therefore, the influence of the research carried out by each institution) fell 1.4 points (to 95.7), it is the area in which UPF most excels, coming in 58th worldwide.

A variety of rankings

Recent years have seen a proliferation of rankings in the world of higher education, with very different methodologies, guarantees and quality.

The THE ranking is a pioneer at the international level, along with the rankings compiled by Shanghai University and the company QS. It is also a benchmark for the sector, as accredited by the European University Association (EUA), which has published three studies on rankings in the last ten years that have highlighted its methodology and rigor, among other things. For the 2019 edition, Times Higher Education included more than 1,200 institutions in 86 countries around the world.
