The discipline of Public Health at UPF has risen seven places compared to last year coming 21^st in the 2019 edition of the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, one of the lists of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), popularly known as the Shanghai ranking.

This classification, drawn up by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, orders the universities according to their quality in various academic disciplines, and takes into account aspects of research, teaching and recognition obtained by faculty and alumni.

In the 2019 edition UPF maintains a total of sixteen academic disciplines in the ranking, spread across four areas of knowledge

This year, Pompeu Fabra University has a total of sixteen academic disciplines (the same as last year), spread across the four areas of knowledge into which the classification is structured: social sciences (7 disciplines), medical sciences (4), engineering (3), and life sciences (2), representing a good example of UPF’s multidisciplinarity and cross-disciplinary academic approach.

In addition to public health, the University stands out for economics and biotechnology (both in the 51-75 bracket), biological sciences (76-100), statistics, communication, medical technology and political sciences (all four in the 101- 150 bracket). In all these disciplines UPF ranks first in Spain, except in political sciences (for which it was in the top 100 last year), and medical technology, in which it comes in second place in both cases.

The other disciplines for which UPF appears are psychology, environmental sciences and engineering, and pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences (all in the 151-200 bracket); clinical medicine, biological and human sciences, and computer sciences and engineering (201-300); and finally, business administration and management (301-400).

The best universities that teach 54 academic disciplines

The Shanghai ranking includes a total of 54 academic disciplines of which, depending on the discipline, it lists between the top 200 and 500 institutions around the world that teach them and in which a total of 1,200 universities appear.

The ARWU, which was first published in June 2003, considers six objective indicators to rank the universities: number of highly cited researchers in various fields (HiCi); number of papers published in the journals Nature and Science; number of papers indexed in Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI); per capita academic performance of the institution; number of alumni receiving Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (Alumni), number of lecturers to have won a Nobel prize or a Fields Medal.
