Pompeu Fabra University vigorously condemns the gratuitous and intolerable violence used by the State forces of law and order yesterday, 1 October, against the citizens, and wishes to show its support for the more than 800 people injured. It also deplores the State's indifference in its declarations of yesterday evening.

It is not the job of the university to take sides in politics. UPF is and aims to be a plural space of academic reflection and debate at the service of the society where a variety of sensitivities and ideologies that enrich the university can live side by side. And it is so based on its firm commitment to democracy and people's basic rights and freedoms.

Universities are responsible for ensuring the continuity of their academic activities. Hence, and in defence of its commitment to pluralism, democracy and fundamental rights, it is not the role of UPF to call for protests or lead any political initiative in support of specific ideological positions that may be arranged over the coming weeks.

Nevertheless, given  the gravity of the events that took place yesterday, the Board of Management has agreed, exceptionally, to join the general stoppage called for tomorrow, 3 October and suspend all activities.
