Jaume Casals, reelected rector of the UPF with broad support of the university community

Jaume Casals is the winner of the elections to UPF rector, after obtaining the 62.6% of validly cast votes. This result will enable him to continue as rector of the University for another four years.

Jaume Casals, full professor of Philosophy, is the winner of the elections to UPF rector, after obtaining 62.6% of validly cast votes. This result will enable him to continue as rector of the University for another four years. The other candidate, full professor Josep-Eladi Baños, won 37.4% of the votes.

The overall participation recorded was 24.97%, about 18 points more than in the elections of 2013, and 6.5 points more compared to 2009. 

By sectors of the University community, Casals has won the majority support of teaching staff and master’s and doctoral students, while Baños has obtained more support from among students and administration and services staff.

The Electoral Board will definitively proclaim Jaume Casals candidate-elect on Friday, 7 April 2017. For the first time, the rectoral elections have been held exclusively electronically between 30 March and 4 April. The e-Vot platform was used. It is hosted and managed by the Consortium of University Services of Catalonia (CSUC), which allows universities to create and manage digital elections.

Brief biography of Jaume Casals i Pons (Barcelona, 1958)

Jaume Casals i Pons is a full professor of Philosophy with the Department of Humanities at UPF and a full staff member of the IEC. He has been rector of UPF from 2013 until the present day.

A doctor of Philosophy, before becoming a UPF lecturer he taught at the UAB and the Université Paris VII. His fields of research include the Greek genesis of modern and contemporary thought, philosophy and literature. He has translated and edited works by Montaigne, Montesquieu, Berkeley and Bergson. He is the author of 40 articles and several books. 

In the field of management he has been UPF vice-rector for Teaching Staff (2005-2009) and for Postgraduate and Doctorate studies (2001-2005), and dean of the Faculty of Humanities (2000-2001). He has also been chair of the Consortium of University Libraries of Catalonia, director of the Institut d’Humanitats de Barcelona (Barcelona Institute for the Humanities) and director of the Department of Philosophy at the UAB, among other positions of responsibility.
