A methodology based on universities’ reputation and influence
This ranking, published yearly by QS since 2011, classifies up to a total of 46 subjects grouped into five areas: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Administration.
With regard to its methodology, QS uses three indicators already present in the global rankings it publishes every autumn: a survey of academic reputation, a survey of employer reputation, and the citations received by the publications of each lecturer. The first two elements are global surveys carried out by QS every year in which academics and employers are asked to identify which are the best universities in the world, in general, and in their own specialized subject area. The third indicator evaluates the citations received by each publication, on the basis of an analysis of the publications in the Scopus database. With regard to this indicator, since 2013 QS has also used a score based on the H-index, a way to measure both the productivity and the impact of the publications of a researcher. The index is based on the most cited set of articles of the researcher in question and the number of citations received in other publications.
With this methodology, QS seeks to provide information about the most highly valued universities and the most influential in each subject.
