QS Quacquarelli Symonds has recently published the 2022 edition of the QS World University Rankings, one of the most consulted university rankings in the world, which puts UPF in 248th position overall, an improvement of 39 places on the previous year, and 107th in Europe, fifteen higher than last year.

At national level, UPF is in fifth place, one higher than last year, in a list topped by the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Madrid, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and the Complutense of Madrid.

Evolution of UPF in the QS ranking

UPF stands out for citations as 72nd university in the world

Much of UPF’s improvement is due to its rise in the citations per lecturer indicator, where it comes 72nd in the world, 51 places higher than in the previous year, with a score of 87.2 (61.4 last year). This indicator, based on Scopus data, measures the average number of citations received by articles by teaching and research staff and is an estimate of the impact and quality of the scientific work produced by universities.

Out of a total of 100, the general score for UPF is 34.8 points, nearly four points up on the previous edition

The other five indicators and the score obtained by UPF are: percentage of international faculty (57.8), academic reputation (30.8), employer reputation (25.8), percentage of international students (23.5), and teacher:student ratio (10.8). Out of a total of 100, the general score for UPF is 34.8 points, nearly four points up on the previous edition.

The highest weighted indicator is academic reputation (40%), followed by number of citations and ratio between teachers and students (both 20%), employer reputation (10%), and percentage of international faculty and international students (both 5%).

Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) tops the list for the tenth consecutive year, while Oxford has risen to second place, with Stanford and Cambridge vying for third place. ETZH Zurich of Switzerland, in eighth position, remains the top university in continental Europe.

The rankings at UPF

An important source to draw up the international rankings are the official data sent by each university, to complement the official data from external sources and research data (e.g., publications) which are taken directly from the main databases (basically, Web of Science and Scopus). International rankings such as QS, Times Higher Education or U-Multirank, or state rankings, like the one by Fundación CyD, receive data from UPF.

The University rankings are worked on jointly by the Projects, Studies and Quality Unit (UPEQ), which sends data to the main lists which are used for the classification, and the Rector’s Office, which deals with the analysis and communication of results. The results are published on the University’s rankings website (which is the source from which promotional materials are updated) and are updated on the institutional Wikipedia.
