UPF is considered the fourth highest-performing university in the Spanish state, according to the 2019 CyD Ranking, conducted by the Fundación Conocimiento y Desarrollo (CyD, Knowledge and Development Foundation) and comes in first position for research, and second for international outreach.

The ranking, now in its sixth edition, analyses 73 Spanish universities (48 public and 25 private), representing 90% of the 81 institutions that offer undergraduate degrees. It includes 2,522 degrees, belonging to 23 different areas of knowledge.

UPF has a high performance in 22 of the 34 indicators common to all universities

The list includes a total of 36 indicators (which are classified on the basis of performance: high, medium and low), across five dimensions: Teaching and learning, Research, Knowledge transfer, International outreach, and Contribution to regional development.

UPF achieves high performance for 22 indicators (out of 34 common indicators that apply to all the universities, i.e., 64.7%). This puts the University in fourth place overall, behind the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Madrid and the University of Navarra, which achieve high performance in 27, 25 and 24 indicators respectively, tying with the Pontificia Comillas University.

In the ranking’s five dimensions, the University stands out for Research, where it comes in first place; and for International outreach, where it ranks second (tied with the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Madrid, and the Ramon Llull). For Knowledge transfer, it comes sixth, along with the universities of Barcelona and Zaragoza.

It should be borne in mind that performance results are not absolute, but relative, as they are established in comparison with the data for all participating universities and are weighted according to the size of the institutions.

An interactive tool that adapts to different target audiences

The ranking by the Knowledge and Development Foundation, which uses the philosophy of the EC’s U-Multirank, made on the basis of relative indicators, aims to be an interactive and comparative tool where it is the user who seeks and selects the universities based on categories that s/he deems important.

It is designed to provide information and decision-making criteria both for future students, university administrators, lecturers, researchers, public authorities, companies and other social stakeholders wishing to establish links with a university. The data included in the analysis come from various sources, with the aim of facilitating broad and comprehensive information: data provided by the institutions directly, data from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, bibliometric and patent data.
