More than two thousand students featured in the 2017 Pompeu Fabra University graduation ceremony

On 7 and 8 July, the courtyard of the Roger de Llúria building on the Ciutadella campus hosted a total of six graduation sessions shared among bachelor’s degree and postgraduate  students at the University, accompanied by their family and friends.

Some 2,000 students of Pompeu Fabra University belonging to the 24th promotion, including more than 1,600 bachelor’s and 400 postgraduate students, celebrated their graduation on 7 and 8 July, accompanied by their family and friends.

The courtyard of the Roger de Llúria building on the Ciutadella campus was the venue that hosted the UPF academic graduation ceremony during which the students came on stage to receive their commemorative diploma.

The ceremony, supported by the UPF Board of Trustees, was divided into six sessions: two on Friday 7 July, one bachelor’s degree and one postgraduate (master’s and doctorate), at 6.00 pm and 8.30 pm, and four on Saturday, 8 July, all bachelor’s degree students, at 10.30 am, 12.30 pm, 6.00 pm and 8.30 pm.

The graduates and doctors, pertaining to a score of undergraduate courses, 31 master’s degrees and various doctoral programmes, were distributed among all these sessions, and could be followed live on the University website and via Twitter with hashtags #GraduacioUPF17 and #JoAlumniUPF.

The two sessions on 7 July were conducted by Mònika Jiménez-Morales, professor with the Department of Communication, while in the four sessions on 8 July, the hosts were, respectively, Imma Amadeo, Ainhoa Sorrosal, Marta Vives and Xantal Llavina, all of them journalists and UPF alumni.

Structure of the sessions and graduation speeches

The screening of the commemorative video of the graduation of the class of 2017 opened each of the sessions, whose highlights were the graduation lessons given by UPF lecturers and the delivery of commemorative diplomas to the graduates, who went up on stage to receive them from several academic authorities related with their respective studies.

The six graduation lessons were as follows: on the Friday 7 July, the lessons of the two sessions were given by lecturers of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies: in the first session (bachelor’s degree students), Óscar Cámara gave “Biomedical Engineering: an opportunity to promote UPF”, while in the second session, for postgraduate students, Emilia Gómez gave the lesson entitled “Music engineering: my journey along an interdisciplinary, international and human-influencing research field”.

On Saturday 8 July, the lessons of the four bachelor’s degree sessions were the following, in this order: “The legal challenges facing the collaborative economy”, given by Carlos Gómez Ligüerre, lecturer with the Department of Law; “The Day After”, given by Louise McNally, lecturer with the Department of Translation and Language Sciences; “Data Yes, but with a critical eye”, by Clara Riba, lecturer with the Department of Political and Social Sciences, and finally, “Work in Modern Times”, given by Jan Eeckhout, lecturer with the Department of Economics and Business.

The programme of each session was complemented with speeches by several graduates representing their peers (missing from the postgraduate session that did include the presentation of the diplomas to the winners of the Doctorate special award) and the screening of an audiovisual, with a greeting by Jaume Casals, UPF rector, and other members of the university community.

The musical accompaniment consisted of two pieces by the UPF choir, directed by Aida Vera: the spiritual I’m going to sing ‘til the spirit moves in my heart, after the graduation speech, and the popular Gaudeamus Igitur, which brought the ceremony to a close.

At the end of each session, all graduates paraded festively towards the courtyard of the Jaume I building, where they joined their family and friends and enjoyed a glass of cava provided by UPF Alumni, who also set up a photocall for the occasion.
