The Phonos season 2020-2021 opens with a Festival that brings together music, sound, audiovisuals and technology. The festival will take place at UPF's Poblenou Campus and includes 15 events over one week.

Summary of the programme

On Monday 28 the festival will open with the presentation of "Phonos",  a sculptural installation that reutilises more than 200 recycled speakers, created by Marc Vilanova as an outcome of the Residency for Musical Creation Pyrenees-Mediterranean 2019 at Phonos. It will be shown during the 5 days of the festival at the UPF Poblenou campus. At 19:30 Haize Lizarazu will offer the performance MANUAL (Hands as Instruments), a intriguing reflection on embodiment, gesture, performance and instrument.

On Tuesday 29, sound artist and researcher Pablo Sanz will offer a talk and a concert entitled Entangled, a multichannel ambisonic work exploring the non-human worlds of the Amazonian rainforest. In addition, FRAMES percussion will play works by Perich, Rykova & Giménez-Comas, in a setting that explores the relationship between humans and technology.

The programme of Wednesday 30 includes a lecture by Arthur Clay and Jürg Gutknecht: "Music from the Skies", presenting GongPong.SAT, a participatory sound artwork for gongs and satellites conceived to be performed by random public participants in any given public space, and that will be performed at Poblenou's superilla on Friday 2nd October. Later, Pablo Fredes' “El Sindicato de Altavoces” will cast four new works that will explore the expressive capacities of the new Phonos 3D audio system. The last event of the day will be the final concert of the Master in Composition with Technology by ESMUC.

Thursday October 1 opens with a talk by Haize Lizarazu on gesture as a creative element, reflecting on her own practice and doctoral research, followed by the radio art concert La Boca Eléctrica by Charo Calvo. The programme of the day will close with Phonos' composer in residency Gil Dori, who has curated a programme based on his artistic research into animated graphic scores.

The festival closes on Friday, October 2, with four events. Belarusian-Russian multidisciplinary artist Tatiana Gerasimenok presents her new audiovisual work with Morphosis Ensemble. At 18h, Art Clay will conduct a participatory performance of GongPong.SAT throughout Poblenou's superilla, starting at the intersection between Roc Boronat and Sancho de Ávila streets. The programme continues with experimental music pioneer Nad Spiro offering a concert on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of her project. The last act of the day will be a tailor-made DJ session remixing material from the Phonos Foundation's sound archive by multifaceted agitator of Barcelona's experimental musical life, Dj Shak.

All the events are free of charge but registration is needed. The registration for the events can be made through the Phonos website from September 17. The events will be also live-streamed on the internet.
