The DCEXS-UPF, by combining transfer and generation of knowledge, aims to be a reference for Public Universities to deal with the future challenges in Research and High Education. UPF's indicators have made it a benchmark for the Spanish and European university systems. In recent years, the University has begun to figure prominently in some prestigious international rankings.
DCEXS belongs to Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) a leading Spanish University, recently recognized as:
- International Campus of Excellence (CEI)
- The 1st Spanish university in the Times Higher Education Indicator. At the international level, the UPF was the 186th in the world rank (THE Ranking, 2011)
- The Spanish leader in quality of its scientific production (CyD report 2011)
Our academic studies
The DCEXS actively trains future talent in research through undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate studies. We currently coordinate five master degrees and one international PhD program in Biomedicine. Two of our master degrees (Biomedical Research and Bioinformatics for Health Sciences) and the PhD program Biomedicine are fully developed in English with significant internalization of both students and teaching staff.
The DCEXS also develops undergraduate degrees in Human Biology, Medicine (jointly with Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) and Biomedical Engineering (joint degree with the Department of Information and Communication Technologies, DTIC-UPF).
The DCEXS is integrated in the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), a leading biomedical research park with more than 100 research groups. The PRBB gathers over 1,400 people from more than 50 different countries to conduct cutting-edge research and transfer it to society. The PRBB provides us with a high excellence scientific environment, regular scientific seminars, a Continuing Professional Development Program (Intervals)
DCEXS has made a big effort to establish important strategic alliances with surrounding research institutes affiliated to the UPF such as:
- Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL)
- Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG)
- Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM)
- Pasqual Maragall Foundation (FPM)
These alliances have allowed us to increase the scientific critical mass of scientists in several areas of research with some of our Faculty members performing their research in these institutes.
The DCEXS has evolved to achieve excellence and international leadership in Cell and Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Evolutionary Biology and Neurosciences, gathering substantial external funding from competitive sources and research contracts with industry, both national and international, of over 10 million Euros per year. Also, the number of scientific articles produced by the DCEXS has been increasing to a total of more than 1,000 articles in last 5 years.
