The Natural Language Processing Group (TALN) is looking for an experienced software developer to support research. The selected candidate will join an interdisciplinary group of highly qualified researchers and engineers and will be tasked with the development of Java tools for NLP tasks such as multilingual speech and text analysis and generation, automatic summarization and translation, etc.

Requirements:
  • A master degree in Computer Science
  • Proven work experience in the development of software and libraries using Java
  • Proficiency using development tools such as IDEs, debuggers and profilers, version control software, maven or similar, etc.
  • Fluent English
Any of the following will be a plus:
  • Knowledge of natural language processing, artificial intelligence or linguistics.
  • NoSQL databases and Linked Data.
  • Web services, javascript and html5
  • Pyhton
  • Machine learning

TALN Research Group, Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC), Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Barcelona, Spain

Applications are invited for a PhD position in the area of text simplification and text summarization.  The candidate is expected to be actively involved in a  research project while carrying out his/her PhD research.

The research will be carried out at the Natural Language Processing research group (TALN) in Barcelona under the supervision of Dr. Horacio Saggion.

Brief Description of Work

The candidate will be involved in research activities related to multilingual  text simplification  and at the same time develop his/her own research in the area of text simplification and summarization.
 

Qualifications:

Applicants should have:

 *** a MsC   in computer science, artificial intelligence, or computational linguistics

*** Knowledge of machine-learning and rule-based approaches

 *** Knowledge of the JAVA programming language.
 

Additionally:

*** Knowledge of the GATE system will be we’ll appreciated

*** Highly motivated individual with experience or interest in the area of automatic text simplification and/or summarization.

Language requirements:

· *** good knowledge of English

Starting date:

The position is expected to start early March/April 2015.

Educational level required:

Msc Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Artificial Intelligence.

Salary and duration of the contract

We offer a gross salary of  €12000 per year which can be complemented with teaching if desired. Social security will be covered by the employer.

The duration of the contract will be of 36  months (initially, a probation 12-months contract).

Requirements

Candidates for PhD positions must hold an MsC degree or equivalent. Candidates not fulfilling this requirement may be interested in DTIC’s 1-year research master programs as a stepping stone to later join the PhD program (Sound and Music Computing, Cognitive Systems and Interactive Media, Intelligent Interactive Systems - with UPC, Brain and Cognition, Computer Vision - coordinated by UAB, Wireless Communications - with UPC, starting 2015-16).
