Linguistics and Multimodal Communication

Abstract:

Since the end of the 19th Century, but even since the very beginning of Western speculation in Philosophy, Grammar and Rhetoric, the field of verbal language has been deeply and widely explored by making lexicons and grammars of all languages in the world, and setting peculiar conceptual frameworks and methodological techniques. But since the time videorecording tools have been available, it is now possible to apply concepts and methods of linguistics to communication systems of the whole body. The talk presents a general project aimed at building a linguistics of Multimodal Communication. A body of research is illustrated aimed at constructing a lexicon and a phonology of the communication systems of gestures, touch, and gaze, and at accounting for the arrangement through which the meanings conveyed in various modalities (gesture, voice, head, face, gaze) interact with each other in multimodal communication.
