Coloma Ballester is Full Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Department of Information and Communication Technologies of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, where she coordinates the Intelligent Multimodal Vision Analysis (IMVA, previously IPCV image processing and computer vision) group.

Her research has been devoted to the development of models and algorithms for image processing and computer vision and to their mathematical analysis. She currently works on theory and applications for the automatic analysis and understanding of visual content, sometimes involving multiple modalities including vision, natural language and audio. She is currently interested in both model-based and data-driven strategies, together with its mathematical analysis. In particular, her research interests include generative models and its use for solving image inverse problems, geometric and semantic analysis and understanding of the dynamic content of videos using multimodal information (including particular contexts such as sports analysis or film and media analysis), unsupervised learning, cross-modal relationships and understanding, data representation, variational models, non-local methods and its applications, visual perception and its modeling.
