For the 2009-2010 academic year, the first in which all the courses the UPF offers for new students are adapted to the European Higher Education Area, the demand for courses at the University has increased by 22% compared to the previous academic year, while the average increase for the Catalan university system is 10%. In figures, the 2315 new places available to study courses at the UPF have been requested as first choice by 4156 students with a demand/offered places ratio of 1.80.

This statistic, which makes the UPF the university that has seen the most significant increase in the Catalan university system (the seven public face-to-face learning universities plus the University of Vic), is reflected in the figures of the University Entrance Guidance Office which were presented this morning by Joan Majó, of the Commission for Universities and Research.

As far as the cut-off marks are concerned, the highest cut-off mark at the University is for Medicine (UPF-UAB), which at 8.67 is the third highest in the Catalan university system. It is followed by Journalism (8.33), Audiovisual Communication (8.32) and Human Biology (8.11). Studies with a cut-off note higher than 7 include Advertising and Public Relations (7.98), Business Management and Administration (7.77), International Business Economics (7.54), Economics (7.27) and Law (7.12).

Thus, of the total of 21 degree courses that the University will offer in the coming 2009-2010 academic year, in fifteen of them demand has been higher than the number of places offered. Most notable are the courses in Journalism, with a ratio between demand and available places of 5, Advertising and Public Relations (4.21), Medicine (3.92), Audiovisual Communication (3.74), Business Management and Administration (2.97) and International Business Economics (2.28).

Some notable facts are the consolidation of Medicine, which has increased the cut-off mark compared to last year (from 8.30 to 8.67); the strengthening of Law, which with 7.12 has increased the cut-off mark and which for the second year in a row has seen a strong increase in demand as first-choice course; the recovery of courses such as the degrees in Translating and Interpreting (German-French), which breaks the downward trend and brings up the cut-off mark (5.24); or Engineering Degree in Computer Science (offered as a degree course for the first time), which this year has a cut-off mark of 5.04 and a ratio of 1.05.

In quantitative terms, the five courses with the most demand were: Law, with 618 applications as first choice; Business Administration and Management (505), Journalism (400), Advertising and Public Relations (337) and Audiovisual Communication (307).

The degrees where demand is lower than the available places are: Translating and Interpreting (Sign Language), Telematics Engineering, Audiovisual Telecommunication Systems Engineering, Labour Relations and Humanities.

Good acceptance of newly created degree courses

The University's newly created degree courses which will start to be taught in the coming 2009-2010 academic year have been well accepted, and the demand to study these courses as first choice has been higher than the number of places on offer.

The new degree in Journalism is particularly noteworthy, with a cut-off mark of 8.33 (the second highest at the UPF) and a ratio of 5 to 1 between demand and the places available. As far as the other newly created degree courses are concerned, the cut-off mark and ratio between demand and places offered is as follows: International Business Economics (7.54 and 2.28), Criminology and Public Prevention Policies (6.36 and 1.55) and Applied Languages (5.11 and 1.24).
