Regulation governing
admission to the Official Master in Translation Studies: Strategies and Processes

1. Specific admission requirements
1.1 In addition
to meeting the general admission requirements set out in current regulations,
the following specific admission requirements must be met in order to be admitted
to this official master's degree:
- All students in possession of a graduate degree or diploma or a bachelor's
in any university field, along with those who have successfully completed the
first cycle of any two-cycle course, provided they have successfully completed
three years of study, with at least an equivalent to 180 ECTS, are eligible
for admission.
- Students who do not possess a graduate degree (or current university equivalent)
in translation and interpretation must pass a qualifying exam in two foreign
languages.
1.2 Students who do not possess a graduate degree (or current university equivalent)
in translation and interpretation must follow a levelling module in order to
supplement their education.
2. Number of places on the master
Admission to the master will be subject to the number of available places as determined by the University's Board of Governors.
3. Admission procedure
The University will open one single application period, during which applicants who meet the general and specific admission requirements, along with those who whilst not meeting them at the time expect to do so before the start of the course, may take part.
Upon completing their application for admission, applicants should submit supporting documents certifying the specific circumstances that are subject to assessment.
Final admission shall be subject to it being certified that the applicant does or will meet the general and specific requirements for admission to the master by the time the course begins.
4. Procedure for assessing applications for admission
If demand for places on the master is greater than availability, applications will be placed in order according to the criteria set out in this regulation.
The selection procedure will be conducted by a selection committee designated by resolution of the committee in charge of the official postgraduate master programme and appointed by the rector, or by the vice-rector to whom the task is delegated. The selection committee shall comprise three lecturers from the scientific field to which the master pertains, one of whom will be appointed as president and one as secretary.
It is incumbent on this committee to select applicants and to solve all issues arising from this activity which are not entrusted to another body.
The committee will publish the selection procedure schedule over the University's institutional website, stating the date on which results will be published. This committee must ensure that the selection procedure is complete before the registration period begins.
The committee will publish its final list over UPF's institutional website. An appeal may be lodged to the rector against this decision.
5. Assessment criteria
The following assessment criteria shall be applied during the selection procedure:
a) A specific assessment of language skills and/or knowledge for translation. An exam will be taken, which will involve:
1. A lecture in
the B language which must be summed up in that language: valued at a maximum
of 20 points.
2. A lecture in the C language which must be summed up in that language: valued
at a maximum of 20 points.
3. A translation from the B language into the A language: valued at a maximum
of 30 points.
4. A translation from the C language into the A language: valued at a maximum
of 30 points.
For the lectures, written expression and understanding of oral language will be assessed for applicants in their B and C languages. For the translations, written language will be assessed in the A language, as will written understanding and the ability to translate using the B and C languages.
A pass will be
given to applicants who achieve the following minimums for each exam:
-Lecture in language B: 15
-Lecture in language C: 10
-Translation B-A: 20
-Translation C-A: 15.
-A period will be given for registering for the exam and all individuals concerned
should pay the fee approved by the body in charge in order to sit the exam.
A receipt for payment will be necessary in order to sit the exam.
b) If the number of students obtaining a pass mark is greater than availability of places, the following assessment criteria shall apply:
1) The mark achieved in the exam (50%).
2) Academic transcript of official education certified in accordance with the UPF regulations for assessing academic transcripts (45%).
3) Specific academic training depending on its relevance to the master, in accordance with the specifications set out in the admission profiles (5%).
Priority will be given to students who meet the admission requirements in June prior to the start of the academic year for which they are applying.
