Regulations governing final examinations

Resolution of the Board of Governors dated 6 October 2004

(This translation into English is of an informative nature. The official version is originally in Catalan.)

Regulations for reviewing exams were approved on 31 July 1990. Subsequently, on 10 June 1992, an academic regulation regarding oral and written exams was passed. It was established that the latter regulation and the former regarding final examinations would constitute the regulations governing final examinations. Moreover, on 26 May 1992 the academic regulations regarding the appointment of a tribunal for organising and assessing the September exam sitting was approved. Said regulation was later modified on 12 May 1994. Since it is necessary to introduce certain amendments to the regulations governing final examinations owing to the extensive period of time that has elapsed since they were approved, it is deemed appropriate to once again set out the regulations in full bringing together all norms governing final examinations into one sole text. The amendments consist of specifying the sphere of application of the regulations, increasing the period for retaining students' exam papers from three months to one year and altering the date as of which the periods for this procedure are counted in order to match it, whereby one common date will apply in all cases.

Article 1. Sphere of application

This regulation applies to official first and second cycle study programmes at Pompeu Fabra University.

Article 2. Examinations

Oral and written exams shall be taken within the period established for that purpose in the academic calendar. Oral exams will be organised and assessed by a tribunal consisting of three lecturers, and they will be public.

Article 3. Exam reviews

3.1. The system for reviewing the marks obtained in final exams, which is to be applied at Pompeu Fabra University, will be set out in these regulations.

3.2. The departments must determine the system for reviewing the marks initially obtained in final exams.

3.3. Once the process established by the department has ended, students may request a review of the marks obtained in final exams pursuant to the following procedure:

- Submission of a letter stating the grounds, addressed to the dean/director of the centre or area of study, within ten days counting from the date when the examination record book is closed.

- The dean/director of the centre or area of study will appoint a tribunal to answer petitions. No appeal may be lodged against any resolution adopted by this tribunal.

Article 4. Review tribunal

4.1. There will be one sole tribunal per sitting, which will be formed by three lecturers, each of whom will be replaced by a substitute when the marks to be reviewed pertain to subjects taught by them.

4.2. Prior to issuing a resolution, the tribunal will need to hear the lecturer in charge of the subject.

4.3. The tribunal shall issue a resolution on all mark review applications within fifteen days counting from the date on which the examination record book is closed.

Article 5. Retaining exams

In order to enable reviews of marks to be conducted, lecturers are required to keep the exams or documents on which the mark is based for at least one year counting from the date on which the examination record book is closed (see the resolution dated 7 June 2006, amending Instruction 01/2004, of the University Archive, establishing the procedure for erasing exams and documents on which the mark is based).

Article 6. Tribunal for organising and assessing the September exam sitting

According to educational methods and under exceptional circumstances, the rector may resolve to appoint a tribunal for organising and assessing the September exam sitting of a subject after a hearing with the board pertaining to the centre or area of study and with the department board.

Repealing provision

The regulations for reviewing final exams, approved by the Resolution dated 31 July 1990, the regulations on final exams, approved by the Resolution dated 10 June 1992, and the academic regulations regarding the appointment of a tribunal for organising and assessing the September exams, approved by the Resolution dated 26 May 1992, modified by the Resolution dated 12 May 1994, are all hereby repealed.
