Real-time PCR technology combines the amplification method developed by Mullis (PCR) with the use of fluorochrome molecules to quantifiably monitor the process of amplifying a specific DNA segment step-by-step. This technique can be applied to a number of fields of molecular biology and is currently used for absolute and relative quantification of DNA or RNA and to determine base change polymorphisms (SNPs).

Applications
Absolute quantification of nucleic acids (viral load, GMOs, allelic dose ...).
Relative quantification of nucleic acids - always through comparison with a housekeeping gene- (gene expression...).
Identification of polymorphisms (detection of SNPs...).
