Presentation

The master's degree in Creative Writing aims to establish a relationship between present-day authors' creative activitity and the highest academic level, while contributing to train writers, critics, copy editors, editors and editorial contributors.

Objectives

The main purpose of the master's degree is for students to develop their ability to write original texts in one of the main contemporary genres as well as become aware of the general issues in literature, to help them assess their own work and work by others from different periods, and to introduce them to the first stages in practical experience in the professional sphere.

Contents

Students must take 30 compulsory credits: 10 credits from the compulsory master's degree module (Fundamentals)and 20 credits from a final master's degree or practicum project. The 30 remaining credits can be obtained from subjects pertaining to the optional module (Writing).

Practicals

The subjects on this master's degree are eminently practical and combine doing exercises and student participation. The main element of the practicum is the final master's degree project, which consists of writing a paper of some 50 to 70 pages in length containing original, unpublished literary text, in Spanish or Catalan, in any of the main genres studied on this master's degree.

Calendar and time schedule

From September to June (afternoon schedule).

This master's degree can be taken either on a full-time or on a part-time basis.

Full-time:
Modules 1 and 3 + 20 optional credits + practicum

At UPF the academic calendar is based on three-month terms. For this reason, compulsory modules are taught during the first two terms, and students are advised to mainly devote the third term to prepare and write the end-of-master project.

Part-time:
First year: 10 optional credits (6 face-to-face courses)
Second year: 10 optional credits (2 face-to-face courses) + 20 practicum credits
